Introduction #

The Hollowing 2D and 3D functions are located in the Prepare workspace, in the toolbar inside the hollow tool.

The goal is to provide a way to hollow a model to reduce the weight and the resin consumption with a non-destructive workflow until you export the model.

Hollowing 2D #

Located under the Hollowing 2D tab, it will allow you to create an internal cavity on all the models in the scene once turned on. Its parameters are global.

The cavity will be generated only during the slicing step, in the 3D view, you will have a preview. You won’t be able to export a 3d model with a cavity. Use the hollowing 3D instead.
All the other features like the hollowing blockers or the holes are compatible with the hollowing 3D.

Don’t forget to add drain holes to avoid the cup effect and trapped resins inside the model that could lead to a print failure.

Tips if you are a pro user:

  • You can toggle the Hollowing 2D per object in the object list.
  • If a Hollowing 3D is applied to a model, it will override the hollowing 2D.

Hollowing lets you add a hollowing 2d to the scene, click on the On button, then change the thickness. A value between 2-3mm is recommended.

The diming is used to change the exposure of the internal lattice or structure automatically generated to support any island inside the model.

Infill regroups all the infill parameters, density, dimming, and pattern form.

Always check if any island is unsupported, and change the lattice parameters to make sure to support everything.

Hollowing 3D #

Like the hollowing 2D, it will let you create an internal cavity.
All the other features like the hollowing blockers or the holes are compatible with the hollowing 3D.

The significant differences are that the cavity is a geometry you can export and have different parameters on each model to fine-tune it.

To add a Hollowing 3D to a model selection, edit the thickness and quality parameters (increasing the quality value will add more geometry for a smoother surface), then click on the hollow 3d tab to apply the hollowing 3d.

If you update the Hollowing 3D, all the supports inside will be removed automatically. Try to Hollow your model first before starting the support process.

Don’t forget to add drain holes to avoid the cup effect and trapped resins inside the model that could lead to a print failure.

Once applied, you can update the value and click again on the button to update or the trashcan icon to remove the hollowing.

Tips:

  • Apply it to multiple objects at once by selecting them before adding a hollowing 3D.
  • You don’t have an automatic infill too, you need to add supports.
  • Use the interior/exterior visibility tool to support the inside of your model.
  • Use the automatic support feature to add support inside the model.
