About #
The Split tool lets you split a model made of multiple models, also known as shells or meshes if they are not connected at a topological level but interpenetrated or not even in contact with each other.
You can hack the Merge Tool to quickly group models together and the Split tool to separate models later if needed.

Usage #
The Split tool is located in the Layout workspace on the viewport’s left.
- Select one or more models, then click on Tools > Split.
- If a model has a hollowing3D, the user will be asked if they want to delete it or apply the transformation.
- If a model has supports, the hollow blockers or the holes will be split between the models. (Always double-check the result)
- It will create new objects based on the object shells.
- The tool analyses the model topology and creates multiple objects with names based on the original model name with the suffix “split-number sequence”
Additional information #
- The model needs to be made of multiple shells that are not connected.
A single shell model can’t be split automatically based on its main shapes. You will have to use the planar cut instead. - If too many objects are created at once, a warning message with the number of models will open and ask for the user’s validation. Depending on your system resources, having too many objects at once could impact performance.
- If defects are detected in a model (red color), an automatic repair will be applied before the split.
- If a model has a hollowing3D, the user will be asked if they want to delete it or apply the transformation.
- The split tool will preserve the supports, the raft, the hollow blockers, and the holes. They will be split between the models. (Always double-check the result)
- If supports are connecting two models, they will still connect the two models once split.
- The islands are automatically deleted. You will have to search again.
- The hollow blockers will be duplicated for each model.
- Floating supports or holes may need some manual cleanup.
- If a model is already hollowed in another software, the slicer will separate the internal cavity as a new object.
- In the preferences, you can change the default choice for the hollowing when you merge models or ask every time for your choice. (screenshot below)
